When something does not fit, there are four routes, and they differ by an order of magnitude in time and cost. The purpose of having local capability is to keep the problem in the first two rows.
The commercial argument for local modification is entirely contained in that table. A twenty-millimetre discrepancy handled on site is a morning’s work; the same discrepancy sent back to the factory can hold a room until the next shipment.
What Local Modification Actually Involves
Work carried out on site or in a local workshop:
- Panel trimming and re-sizing, with edges refinished to match
- New drilling for hardware, hinges and connectors
- Filler and closing-panel fabrication to suit the built condition

Cases where the factory still has to be involved:
- Proprietary veneers and bespoke finishes that cannot be matched from local stock
- Structural components where trimming would compromise the design load
- Items where modification would void the manufacturer’s warranty
- Sequenced or bookmatched material that must come from the original batch
- Carcasses too small rather than too large — material cannot be added invisibly
In those cases the right action is to identify it early, raise it with the factory with photographs and measurements the same week, and plan the room around the replacement rather than discovering the constraint during snagging.
Stone Needs a Different Approach
Stone and solid surface are not adjusted the way timber is. A slab that does not fit is usually re-templated and re-cut rather than trimmed in place, and bookmatched material may not be replaceable from the same block at all.

Fittings, Structure and Modification Safety
Imported cabinetry uses cam-lock and Minifix connectors, dowels, concealed hinges, soft-close runners and adjustable suspension brackets. Modification has to respect how the carcass carries load, because a panel trimmed through a connector position or a run of dowels loses the joint it depended on.
Checks before any structural modification:
- Where the connectors, dowels and fixing points sit inside the panel
- Whether the cut passes through a load path or only through a finish
- Whether the unit is wall-hung, and how the load reaches the wall
- Whether additional support or bracketry is needed after the cut
- Whether the edge can be refinished to match the original

Laser levels establish a datum across a whole run rather than unit by unit; track saws produce a straight, clean cut on a finished panel; trimming routers and edge tools re-form a profile; and digital measuring reduces the accumulated error that a tape introduces across several metres.
The method matters as much as the kit. Cutting a finished panel means protecting the face, supporting it correctly, cutting on the right side of the line and refinishing the edge immediately — a rushed cut on a lacquered panel creates a second problem larger than the first.
